Github repository failing to detect new files and folders....why????

I have created a new empty backup repository in one GitHub account, invited myself (as in my personal GitHub account) to collaborate and accepted the invitation and that repository now appears in my list of repositories in my personal account.

I have added this new backup repository to Github Desktop.

Previously I added a dev repository to the other GitHub account, invited myself as a collaborator, set this repository up in Github Desktop and have been actively working on this dev repository and updating it successfully with Github Desktop.

Then I copied all the files and folders I have been working on in my dev repository to this new backup repository.

And infuriatingly Github Desktop WILL NOT recognize the changes so I cannot update it.

WHY???? What am I doing wrong???? This is not the first time this sort of ANNOYING problem has happened!
