[URGENT] The 1MB Profile Photo (PFP) limit is unacceptable in 2026 (Ongoing issue since 2023)

Hello GitHub team. I am opening this discussion because the current profile picture system is severely outdated and needs an urgent update. It is 2026, and a 1 MB limit for a photo is simply unworkable. Everyday phone cameras output images between 4 MB and 20 MB. We understand server space considerations, but a 10 MB limit is a reasonable and necessary baseline for modern times.

Furthermore, these strict limitations prevent us from utilizing formats like APNG (Animated Portable Network Graphics). Giving users the option to upload APNGs would be fantastic for self-expression, allowing us to update our profiles dynamically.

APNG support is a great "nice-to-have" feature, but removing the 1 MB size restriction is an absolute necessity right now. It would also be highly preferable to keep the PFP hosting internal rather than outsourcing it to third parties.

Agree on this, this is such a silly restriction, also the original image that I uploaded years and years ago was certainly bigger than this.

Hi Github, I was going to update my photo and just realized this limit. Idea: you can process the image on the client-side to reduce the size, but please stop putting that burden in the users given the 1MB size for images is quite unresonable these days.
